Esperanza wants a new name that people know, that popular, and represents who she is and is her personality. “Esperanza shows her name is not the name she would like she says “Like a name like Lisandra or Maritizia or Zeze” In addition, Esperanza’s mother writes a letter to Sister Superior and says “ Dear Sister Superior please let esperanza eat in the lunchroom because she lives too far away away and she gets tired. As you can see, she is very skinny I hope to God she does not faint Thank you Mrs.E Cordero” (Cisneros's 45) This shows Esperanza wants to eat in the lunch room to be like other kids who eat there.Esperanza wants to be like the others kids who fit in. Esperanza tries very hard to be like her peers but in the end she becomes strong and independent.Esperanza turns into a strong independent women who learns to live for herself and follow her dreams. For example, Like it or not you are Mango Street and one day I’ll come back too.
